Items in society are deemed more masculine or more feminine. Why do we have these associations? Why do we must gender everything we see?
I looked into the French language and how nouns are either masculine, feminine or plural. Ironically, the items that I chose for each gender for this project - which all evidently ended up being the opposite gender in the French language such as "bra" - a very feminine item became masculine as "un soutien-gorge" not "une".
I looked into the things that I owned - both of the typically masculine and feminine, to figure out what makes something appear masculine or feminine. I went literal with a bra for feminine, but also considered how the fabric is lace - soft and fragile, so I paired it with some beautiful and delicate gypsophila. Meanwhile, for the masculine side, I focused on mechanical and structured items, such as my watch.
But, then there are Dr. Martens, which have no ties to either mainstream gender. They have the beauty of being androgynous.
